ALLs- Accelerated Learning in Literacy

Week 6 Term 2

This term, a group of students from room 16 have been part of the ALL's programme (Accelerated Learning in Literacy). This programme is to help students lift their grades/ levels in literacy. Mrs McGarry's group meets 3 times a week and do extra reading; while the remainder of the class works on their writing with the wonderful Mrs Robinson.

This week we read a text about rice and were amazed at all the things that are made from rice. We were particularly interested in how they made rice paper so we tried our hand at making healthy rice paper rolls! They were DELISH!

Food Revolution Day

Week 4 Term 2

On Friday the whole of SPS took part in 'Food Revolution Day!'

Food Revolution Day is a global campaign to put compulsory practical food education on the school curriculum. Jamie Oliver passionately believes that by educating children about food in a fun and engaging way, we can equip them with the basic skills they need to lead healthier, happier lives, for themselves and their future families.

Room 16 loved 'Food Revolution Day'; we discovered new foods we hadn't eaten before and combined flavours to create an awesome 'Squash it Sandwich'. We also learnt about following instructions and  working well with others.

Here is some feedback from some students:
  • Tali: 'I enjoyed making the sandwich, working as a team and helping others'.
  • Nelson: 'I enjoyed cutting up the apples and working with my buddy'.
  • Abdul: 'I enjoyed doing the cutting and passing my knife exam'.
  • Zhara: 'The sandwich tasted very powerful because of the balsamic vinegar'.

2000 & Fit-teen

Week 3 Term 2

This week we launched our new inquiry topic- 2000 & Fit-teen; How can we make this place a healthy space?

We started by testing our fitness levels and abilities. We did shuttle runs, bur-pees, monkey bars and squats. For each fitness test we recorded our times or the number we did and made a note of them in our inquiry books. Over the term we will work at building up our fitness levels so that we can smash our initial fitness times and numbers!

We also watched a New Zealand documentary done by Nigel Latta on sugar and its effects on people and their health. It was a really interesting documentary and has already got us thinking about our own health and possible inquiry questions.

Here's the link to the documentary if your interested: 'Is sugar the new fat?'

Charlize smashed the monkey bars- next time she will time herself and see how quick she is!
John using his upper body strength.
Active sports will really help up build up our fitness levels!
Julia juggling her hockey ball on her hockey stick like a pro!
Fierce competition!
'Game on!' Says Terrie and Zhara.

We got a Principal Award!

Week 3 Term 2

What an awesome way to end an awesome week- our entire class to received a Principal Award from Mrs Viliamu and all the students in Room 23! #buddyclassrox

Human Timeline filiming

Week 3 Term 2

This week has been really exciting! An actual film crew came in and filmed Te Manawa's WW1 Human Timeline which was our outcome for our term 1 inquiry.

Mrs McGarry was most impressed with all the narrators who still remembered their scripts off by heart from 5 week ago!

We cant wait for the film company to finish piecing together the footage so we can see how it all turned out!

Group one getting filmed first.
Even though each group had to have 'take' after 'take, the narrators nailed their script every time!
The actors also perfected their freeze-frames!
We learnt that it is hard work being a movie star.
